Having wrapped up his astonishing 178 date world tour of album X at the end of 2015, and taking this year as a well-deserved break from the limelight, Ed Sheeran has made his return to social media sending fans into a frenzy in the belief that new music will be soon to follow.
A year has passed since the singer’s last social media activity; a post which outlined his plans to concentrate on recording and “travel the world” whilst also promising that his return would bring his 3rd album. Sheeran’s reappearance on both Twitter and Instagram comes in the form of a cryptic blue image, teasing fans with the speculation that the post hints not only at the long-awaited album release, but a 2017 tour.
Rumours of a 2017 tour will come to the delight of Sheeran fans who turned out in their masses to make the singer’s 2015 X album tour such a resounding success, most impressively of which included an unprecedented 3-day sell out of Wembley Stadium.
The forthcoming year could prove to be Sheeran’s biggest to date, as alongside the album release and inevitable tour, the industry is buzzing with murmurings of the singer taking on a headline set at Glastonbury next summer. Whilst the rumours of a performance at the renowned festival are yet to be confirmed, it’s undeniable that hits such as Sing and Thinking Out Loud would go down a treat with the crowd of over 150,000 festival-goers.
Most recently, fans were teased with a glimpse of new Sheeran material in the form of the latest X-Factor winner’s debut single, When Christmas Comes Around, which he penned alongside songwriter Amy Wadge. To further tantalise eager fans, Wadge has revealed that the singer is set to “break the internet” with his latest album, adding vaguely that it would be out “really soon”.
However soon that may be, a new album and tour announcement from the Lego House hitmaker could be the early Christmas gift we are all hoping for.
